1. Yuva for Seva
It's a 21 days on-field project for MMS first-year students where they work with various NGOs for above mentioned time duration.
The objective behind the implantation of this practice is as follows:
To develop students as socially responsible business leaders.
To sensitize the social problems and give them solutions through our initiatives and projects.
To associate with NGOs at the Pan India level and to help them for achieving their objectives.
To increase and develop students' understanding of NGO management.
Today corporate values employees who are socially responsible and sensitive toward social issues, any such exposure makes students employable. To differentiate our students from other management students at the time of final placement.
The Context
We started this practice in December 2014. During the implementation of this practice, we faced various challenges such as placing more than 200 students in various NGOs, continuously monitoring these students’ designing policies and rules, and regulations, accommodating these dates in our academic calendar and evaluating these projects. With this one very important challenge was to motivate the students to work in NGOs as most of the students never had this type of exposure. It was a challenge for us to mentally prepare our students to work in various NGOs as well as to convince their parents too.
Practice
Practice Most of the management institute give more focused-on management workshops and projects but to differentiate our students and to make them socially responsible we initiated this practice. As earlier our CSR initiatives were limited to CSR cell students so “Yuva for Seva “has been introduced to give exposure to all the students. This is an on-field compulsory project for first-year students. Under this project, students work with NGOs for 15 days and at the end of the project, they submit the report, and these projects are monitored by our faculties. After the successful completion of the project, students participate in a “Poster Competition” based on their on-field experience. The three best posters are selected and awarded cash prizes. Students are placed in various NGOs across India based on their area of interest and preferred location. This exposure helps them to have actual on-field experience and understand the issues at the grass root level. Thus becomes the empathetic leader as they grow. This also serves one of the missions of the B school to develop socially responsible leaders and help them stand out from the crowd at the time of final placement as now a day’s companies also prefer socially responsible managers. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has launched a program called Unnat Bharat Abhiyan with an aim to connect institutions of higher education, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs), etc. with local communities to address the development challenges through appropriate technologies.
Challenges
A developing country, India has got a lot of scope for social development through different areas of application. However, the societal awareness is a big challenge that leads to lack of proper support. To add to this there are areas in the society which are not looked at due to social stigma or associated taboo.
Impact
Through Yuva for Seva we have been able to sensitize students and create a sense of social responsibility in them. Application of their experiences in the social service initiatives will help become better management professionals.
2. Sell-on
As soon as the students join the institute, on the day of induction they are given a briefing, for the “Sell-on” activity. It is a 5-day event. In this, the student goes to NGOs and collects products made by their people, and then they are given basic skills to negotiate and sell those products. The revenue collected is again taken by the students to give to the NGOs. This helps in kindling thoughts for people who are socially deprived. Also, the thought towards inclusive growth is understood by them.
Objective behind Implementation
Students should be able to identify and explain customer needs and wants
Students should be able to apply various selling techniques
Students should be able to explain and describe the management principles learned
Students should be able to demonstrate public speaking skills
Students should be able to identify and suggest the role of social responsibility in business.
Students should be able to practice and evaluate team-building skills.
Students should be able to get close to people from different segments of society and understand the importance of inclusiveness.
Students should become an empathetic leader as they grow, so this activity intends to kindle this feeling in them.
The Context
Immediately after The Outbound Program, the student goes for the ‘Sell-On’ activity which lasts for four to five days depending upon their ability to sell. The Institute in its objective of making students familiar with the practical aspects exposes them to the world of the unknown and how they need to understand their situation and act in the best possible manner. The entire task of going to NGOs to pick up the products made by these underprivileged people sensitizes them toward reality. Including their creation to get better revenue helps them understand the joy of inclusiveness. Facing the challenges of sales, help them break the inhibition and phobia towards the concept of “Selling”. Success in selling to unknown people builds their confidence.
The Practice
The students are given basic training in sales and negotiation techniques. They are even suggested not to sell their family and friends in the first 2 days, but rather face the unknown people and take the challenge. There are faculty coordinators, who monitor the entire activity. In the end, students are appreciated and motivated for their success.
Challenges
Identifying the right product/concept to sell.
Onboarding NGOs with the product/concept as identified in point 1 3. Organizing the logistics of product delivery to the student and cash handling.
Impact
Help the underprivileged members of the society by helping them in selling the products they make
The activity exposes the students to the ground realities of the society
Students become more proficient in dealing with unknow person, handle rejections and learn selling and team working.
3. Parichay
Two days outbound training program for MMS (New Batch) is organized by Institute every year by HR Faculty for the students known as "Parichay" Learning by Doing at a serene and quiet place. Students visited generally Rambhau Mhalgi, Prabodhini at Bhayandar, Mumbai. One of the effective ways of teaching some of the management lessons is through outbound learning activities. Individual and team behaviour is improved through outdoor activities which use experiential learning techniques. The faculty members interacted with students. The students were given some Yoga tips to improve concentration and health. A few activities were also conducted for the students such as management games, bonfires, and a cultural program.
The objective behind the implementation of these practices is
To understand the perspective we carry out about ourselves, others, and situations
To understand the importance of communication and negotiation
To know the importance of inter and intrapersonal relationships and create a sense of understanding and bonding towards each other
To move out of our comfort zone, keep our egos aside and synchronize as a team
The Context
Outbound Training Program “Parichay” learning by doing was introduced for all students as part of the Induction Program. It is organized for 2 days of outdoor activity which will help new batch students to see the importance of communication, leadership, teamwork, planning, and delegation. Outbound training is one of the best platforms for personality development, confidence building, and team building.
The Practice
We started this activity in the year 2016 to ensure students can enhance some of the skills like team building, leadership skills, planning, change management, motivation, delegation, coordination, time management, and many more are learned through outbound learning activities. Outbound benefits students by motivating team performance by using complementary skills, accelerated change and developing effective leadership, increasing collaboration, innovation, and productivity, and developing team strategies for getting results, building trust, and giving and receiving feedback.
Challenges
Since the students come from different background so they are heterogeneous. Initially they remain shy and don’t mix up with everyone easily. So it becomes little difficult to break the ice at first instance.
Impact
Learning by experience is a powerful methodology. It is not only through the classroom but also through outbound activities like Parichay. Under Parichay students undergo through multiple rounds of outdoor learning, focusing on management activities and real-life challenges, designed to test their managerial and leadership skills. The outbound program offers a mix of physical and mental activities range management games to yoga and many more. We continuously evaluate each student and grade them on process compliance, leadership skills, creative thinking, quality of work, initiatives, teamwork, timely completion of tasks, and overall capabilities.
These outbound activities which is student-based learning will allow the student to approach physical, social, mental, and emotional challenges, this training also acts as a behavioral change tool to develop a different aspect of students
