Experiential learning helps in better understanding of challenging and complex operations management concepts with observational learning and experience. Making process video involves teamwork and better understanding of the concepts like types of processes, process flow and bottlenecks, Process Improvements, cycle time and throughput time and to understand how processes are important to transform inputs into predetermined outputs.

Objectives of the Event:

This Experiential learning activity is designed for First year MMS students (310 students) to understand the concept of production and service processes, where students learn to analyze the process and give their insights with the help of activity “How Things Work- A Peek into processes” experiential learning of Operations management course.

The objectives of this activity is to develop students on technical skillsets like process analysis and insight, conversion process, inputs and outputs, managerial skills development like team building interpersonal skills, coordination, communication, presentation skills etc.

Students make their teams and start working on Video clips approximately 3-4 weeks time is given to them. Total time line of this event from announcement to execution is 5-6 weeks.

Execution of an Event:

After teams are formed and finalized, students have to brainstorm and decide about the Company, organization or outlet on which they are going to make videos.

These edited videos with proper voice-over are submitted to Operations Cell. Screening of all videos is done based on the elimination and evaluation criteria. On the Grand Finale Day all these selected videos are played and student are asked to face the Q and A session is conducted by industry experts. It helps teams to know their understanding on, process insights and challenges faced by the companies etc.

Execution of an Event:

After teams are formed and finalized, students have to brainstorm and decide about the Company, organization or outlet on which they are going to make videos. They have to submit the topics on following email id: operations.event@ves.ac.in

Out of 24 videos, 12 best videos will be short listed through First Screening by the panelists (faculties from Operations department and students of Operations Cell) based on the criteria on 4th December 2024 and selected 12 teams were informed about it on 10th of December 2024. On the event day Grand Finale ie 12th December 2024 these shortlisted videos were played along with the students presentations in front of all audience and panelists.

We had invited 2 panelists, one from Industry Ms. Radhika Subramaniam, AGM, Retail, Godrej and Boyce and Prof. Subhashish R. Chowdhury Visiting Faculty from Finance Dept. to evaluate students. Panelists evaluated the teams to know their understanding on, process insights and challenges faced by the companies etc through Q&A session and videos. Four best teams were selected by the Panelists from 12 selected teams based on the presentations followed by the Q and A session for each team individually based on the learnings during their visit to companies. Three best videos were awarded with prizes as Winner students are given certificates of honors and remaining participants are given e-certificates of participation.

Report on Group Visit to “Godrej & Boyce”, Vikhroli.

The visit is planned specially for MMS Sem III students of Operations specialization to witness the shop floor activities and various processes. Students also learn about how planning is being done for Godrej Security Solution division.

Objective:

  • Learn about manufacturing and quality control.
  • To understand how planning is done

The visit started with registration at plant no. 13 in a conference room by logging in to the system as and Briefing from HR Ms. Rachana Bhuse Madam (VP-HR) about Godrej & Boyce:

Godrej & Boyce is a renowned Indian organisation with a rich history dating back to 1897. The company has established itself as a leader in various sectors, including consumer goods, real estate, and industrial products.

Industry Visit Report: Pitambari Products Mother Warehouse

Location: Pitambari Products Mother Warehouse, Bhiwandi, Thane

Introduction

The purpose of the visit to the Pitambari Products Mother Warehouse was to gain insights into the company’s operations, logistics, and product management. Pitambari Products is known for its range of cleaning and hygiene products.

Objective of the Visit to Pitambari Products Mother Warehouse

  • Gain insights into the operational processes and logistics management of the warehouse.
  • Observe the implementation of advanced inventory management systems (SAP-HANA).
  • Assess inbound logistics, including receiving and quality checks for raw materials.
  • Understand outbound logistics and dispatch processes, including automated systems.
  • Identify potential areas for improvement in inventory control and storage optimization.
  • Explore transportation and distribution strategies, including in-house and third-party logistics.

Overview of Pitambari Products

Pitambari Products specializes in manufacturing and distributing various cleaning solutions, including detergents, disinfectants, and personal care products. The company emphasizes quality and innovation in its product offerings.

Warehouse Operations

  • Layout and Design: The warehouse is designed for efficient flow, featuring designated areas for receiving, storing, and dispatching goods. The Products are stacked approximately 6ft due to the lower boxes not able to hold the weight.

  • Technology Utilization: Advanced inventory management systems were observed, enabling real-time tracking of stock levels and order fulfillment. Pitambari Products have implemented SAP-Hana to improve their efficiency.

  • Storage Solutions: The warehouse has categorized various products and stacked them differently, using FIFO and the products are created in batches. The warehouse keeps a Safety Stock of 1 month.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management

  • Inbound Logistics: The process of receiving raw materials and packaging was streamlined, with thorough checks for quality and quantity. A leading seller DEEP SHAKTI lamp oil has an expiration time of 1 year and if the product is not out of the warehouse for 8 months the product is sent back to R&D. while in cases of health care products, the products nearing the expiration date are scrapped.

  • Outbound Logistics: The dispatch area is organized to ensure timely delivery. The use of automated systems aids in minimizing errors.

  • Transportation: The company utilizes a mix of in-house and third-party logistics to manage distribution efficiently. They use their own transport vehicles to cater the needs of Mumbai. They also do a MILKRUN to cater the needs of sister warehouse.

Safety and Compliance

  • Health and Safety Standards: The warehouse follows stringent safety protocols, including proper handling of food products where they are stored differently from other type of products.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Regular audits ensure adherence to industry regulations and standards.

This Experiential learning activity is designed for First year MMS students (180 students) to understand the concept of production and service processes, where students learn to analyze the process and give their insights with the help of activity “How Things Work- A Peek into processes” experiential learning of Operations management course.

The objectives of this activity is to develop students on technical skillsets like process analysis and insight, conversion process, inputs and outputs, managerial skills development like team building interpersonal skills, coordination, communication, presentation skills etc

Students made their teams and started working on Video clips from 1st October 2023 nd all teams together submitted 17 videos before the deadline ie 1st October 2023.

The last date for group formation and notification of the topic (name or type of organization selected for the event) to us is 12th October 2023 at operations.event@ves.ac.in.

On the event day Grand Finale ie 6th November 2023 these shortlisted videos were played along with the students’ presentations in front of all audience and panelists. We had invited 2 panelists, one from Industry Mr. Ajay Singh and one from Academics Dr. Sushma Patil, experts in operations domain to evaluate students. Panelists evaluated the teams to know their understanding, process insights and challenges faced by the companies etc through Q&A session and videos. Three best teams were selected by the Panelists from 9 selected teams based on the presentations followed by the Q and A session for each team individually based on the learnings during their visit to companies. Three best videos were awarded with prizes as

The Grand Finale of "How Things Work," 5th Edition, was successfully conducted on Monday, November 6, 2023, We received 18 videos from them, with a total participation of over 184 students; out of that, we shortlisted 9 videos for the final round.

How Things Work is the Flagship event of Operations Department for first year MMS Students that is conducted in Semester -1, during teaching the course Operations Management

Objectives of the Event:

Experiential Learning is the process of learning by doing. By engaging students in hands-on experiences and reflection, they are better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

“How Things Work” activity is organized by Operations Department, for First year MMS students (180 students) to understand the concept of production and service processes. In this experiential learning Students gain not only insight into their own skills, interests, passions, and values but also learn to analyze the process and give their insights with the help of video clip and presentations. The other technical skillsets like, better learning of the concepts like types of processes, process flow and bottlenecks, Process Improvements, cycle time and throughput time are learnt in a better manner.

Execution of an Event:

After teams are formed and finalized, students have to brainstorm and decide about the Company, organization or outlet on which they have made videos and submitted the topics on following email id: operations.event@ves.ac.in .

Out of 18 videos, 9 best videos were shortlisted listed through First Screening on 9th March 2022 by the panelists (faculties from Operations department) based on the criteria mentioned in the guidelines. Selected 9 teams were notified about it. On the event day Grand Finale ie 12th March 2021 these shortlisted videos were played along with the students presentations in front of all audience and panelists on an online mode Google meet. Panelists evaluated the teams based on the knowledge, understanding, process insights and challenges faced by the companies etc through Q&A session and videos. Three best teams were selected by the Panelists from 9 selected teams. Students have to give presentations based on the learnings during their visit to companies. Three best videos were selected by the panelists for the best 3 awards.

HOLOCAUST EVENT

Learning Objectives:

  • To expose students to various situations of disaster and encourage them to evaluate solutions to the problems.
  • To use alternatives to reduce the risk, impact and develop risk mitigation strategies.

What is HOLOCAUST?

HOLOCAUST is the Disaster Management competition, aimed to test the management skills, disaster reduction techniques and how well they improvise in any kind of situation.

This event consists of two rounds

Round 1 – BUFFET OF MISFORTUNES: In this round the situation will be revealed and the team has to make necessary decisions collaboratively. Team leader must submit their ppt (in pdf format) on or before the given deadline shortlisting will be done on the basis of following parameters:

  • Creativity
  • Idea of the team
  • Feasibility
  • Impact analysis
  • Disaster response
  • Vulnerability assessment
  • Business continuity plan

Round 2 – DEBACLE REDUCTION: Online presentation in panel round followed by 5minutes Q&A session.

Prize money for winning teams were:

  • Winner: Rs.5000
  • First Runner up: Rs.3000
  • Second Runner up: Rs.2000

There were 23 Participants and the judges online started at 4:50 PM 7.00 pm. The event started with presentation given by organizing team, Pranali Morje and Asmita Tikhade where they introduced panelists for an event and gave instructions to participants as well as panelists.

“HOW THINGS WORK” A Peek into Processes- Experiential Learning 2021

Experiential learning helps in better understanding of challenging and complex operations management concepts from the first-hand experience.

Being pandemic year, the change has been made in guidelines by considering restrictions and risks. Students made their teams and started working on Video clips from end of February 2021 and all teams together submitted 17 videos before the deadline ie 23rd March 2021.

Objectives of the Event

This Experiential learning activity is designed for First year MMS students (180 students) to understand the concept of production and service processes, where students learn to analyze the process and give their insights with the help of activity “How Things Work- A Peek into processes” experiential learning of Operations management course.

The objectives of this activity is to develop students on technical skillsets like process analysis and insight, conversion process, inputs and outputs, managerial skills development like team building interpersonal skills, coordination, communication, presentation skills etc.

Guidelines

  • Looking at pandemic situation and restrictions, students can conceptualize about a business or a start-up wherein they have to come up with entire process insight like inputs (vendors) and resources, outputs, process type, production, supply chain operations, financial aspects and profitability. In this, they can work on flow chart of process, design and other relevant details and can make PPT presentation or video of their entire work as a part of video clip.
  • At least ONE student of the group should appear in the video clip or photos.(if they are going for industry visit)
  • Students can take video sent to them from the company employees (without visiting the company but authentic video and should not be downloaded from any website) where they understand entire process and make presentation or video by incorporating all the details pertaining to operations processes.
  • Students have to make presentations to give process insight for the final round.
  • Students have to get topic approval based on first come first served basis by mailing us on   operations.event@ves.ac.in   to avoid repetition.

  • Very important: Kindly take safety precautions and maintain social distancing by using masks and sanitizer during the visit.

We had invited 3 panelists from multi domains to evaluate students from various different angles. Panelists evaluated the teams to know their understanding, process insights and challenges faced by the companies etc through Q&A session and videos. Three best teams were selected by the Panelists from 9 selected teams based on the presentations followed by the Q&A session for each team individually based on the learnings during their visit to companies. Three best videos were awarded with prizes as
