Ever since the computers were invented, people wondered whether they might learn and think like humans. Imagine if computers are made to learn, to improve automatically with experience, the output would be dramatic. Imagine computers reviewing legal documents and flagging them as relevant to a particular case or imagine computers learning from medical records and advising on effective treatments on diseases, or optimizing energy cost based on a particular usage pattern of customers for an energy company.

“Employees First. Customers Second”. So says Vineet Nayar, Vice Chairman and CEO of HCL Technologies. He implemented a radical management theory where employees come first and a structure where “management is accountable to employees as well as the other way around”. The results at HCL are for everyone to see. Richard Branson of Virgin fame revolutionized this philosophy. He believes that “People out on the frontline, they know when things are not going right and they know when things need to be improved. And if you can listen to them you can soon improve all those niggly things which turns an average company into an exceptional company”. The moral of the story is, listen to your employees. They may give you the best piece of advice for your business growth.

Gamification is a comparatively new concept developed by companies to recruit, select and maintain employee engagement in the job. Use of games in recruitment helps the employers judge few aspects of interviewees which wasn’t possible with traditional recruitment process. Whether or not one is a team player cannot be judged by traditional interview process but putting two teams against one another helps the management see who is able to manage the team. Not only that, but most of the out-of-box thinking happens while playing. It helps them screen more than one candidate at once.Artificial intelligence plays an important role too.

The decade ahead is expecting millennial generation to comprise three-quarter of the work force. Millennials like any other generation have their own set of natural talents and develop some skills which they need. Some are innate and some are consequence of the environmental impact. In this new wave of globalized approach this generation looks towards leadership from a different approach then been perceived by the previous generations. This new generation traits are asking these captains to steer the boat with disparate approach which justifies their rationale. “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other” as rightly been quoted by John Kennedy. The B-school being one of the anchors guiding them path of journey needs to grasp, where to focus the effort of nurturing and grooming which would suit the traits of new generation leaders. This place of wisdom has to realize that a “square peg in a round hole would not fit”. Thus the unique talent should be identified and nurtured in such a way that it churns out a “Next-Gen leader.”
