Yuva for Seva - Corporate Social Responsibility

Most management theories discuss the impact of human behavior in an organization, society, and community. A business school which fails to address the behavior of people in a society fails in its purpose - to develop a manager with human values. Vivekanand Education Society Institute of Management Studies and Research (VESIM) is committed to instilling a sense of social responsibility in its management students. In order to align this goal with its management programs, all students are required to contribute to social initiatives as volunteers.

VESIM is a constituent ofVivekanand Education Society (VES), which was conceptualized to materialize the dream of “social equality”. Following the footsteps of its parent organization, VESIM has been supporting various social initiatives since its inception. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at VESIM has evolved to include the participation of students, the local community, NGOs, and faculty members.

Principles of CSR at VESIM

CSR at the Institute encourages students to imbibe values of enlightened leadership, which focuses on the following principles:

  • Respect for fellow humans and their views
  • Willingness to reach out to people in need, and touch their lives through small contributions
  • Ability to handle various challenging social situations, and creating workable solutions for them.

CSR Mission of VESIM

  • CSR Cell of the Institute aspires to be known as a Center of Excellence, and has already initiated collaborations with NGO’s for CSR projects in relevant areas such as education, health, environment, and community development.
  • VESIM empowers students by providing several opportunities to serve underprivileged sections of society, and enhance their quality of life.
  • Incorporating CSR in the curriculum of various management courses.

Features of CSR Initiatives at VESIM

The following are features of VESIM’s social immersion program:

  • Student Social Responsibility (SSR): VESIM meets its CSR mission through the CSR Cell, which was established in 2010. The Cell organizes various social initiatives such as organ and blood donation camps, stem cell registry camp, etc. All these events are conceptualized and conducted by students. These events not only help students to understand social issues but also offer them practical experience of various management lessons. For example, by organizing a blood or organ donation camp, students get opportunities to understand and solve social issues. First year students are encouraged to “Sell-on” various items prepared by underprivileged children, and collect money for them. This activity helps to polish their marketing skills, as well as managerial skills.
  • YUVA for SEVA: This social immersion initiative was introduced in 2014, with the purpose of delivering a broad social exposure to students. This is a compulsory on-field project for students in the first year of the PGDM. The students are encouraged to work with an NGO for 21 days, and are required to submit the report on their findings. These projects are reviewed by our faculty members. After the completion of the project, students are encouraged to design posters based on their NGO experience. The students are allowed to select the NGO of their choice in the preferred location. All these experiences have helped students to sharpen their managerial skills, as well as build problem-solving aptitude. These skills have immensely favored our students at the time of final placements, where organizations are keen to intake socially responsible managers.
